Medellin Colombia--For Norteamericanos!

I love Colombia, the emerald green coated mountain, temperate climates, even its sophistication. Despite years of unrest and violence, things are calm here. The government is dedicated and successfully combating the problems of the past. Sarah and I spent four whole weeks enjoying the offerings of Medellin and Bogota, and know it as the undiscovered gem it is.

If you've ever thought of doing something a little out of the ordinary, I can't recommend Colombia more highly. Colombia's bad reputation is a diservice to its industrious, well educated people, and to foriegners who are missing one of the worlds great places. It's a true melting pot, and you see the difference as you travel from Bogota, to Medellin and on to the coast town of Cartagena. Spanish mixed with native peoples and blacks has made a country full of beautiful people, who know and are PROUD of their heritage. Strolling in a park on Sunday, you may hear a school group sing, "Soy Colombiana, hasta morir", "Colombian until I die!"

Despite the bad press, Colombia has culture and accomadations to suit any price range. Modern apartments can be found via the internet at value prices, from 150 per week and up including cable, modern kitchens and maid service. If you take a tour, accomadations are included which may not be the value option. If you have a sense of adventure and some Spanish finding acommadations on your own is not unreasonable. The website "poorbuthappy.com/colombia" has extensive forums where you can chat with other gringos about all parts of your trip. We find guide books like Lonely Planet trustworthy and accurate.
